Toyohashi – In order to enhance the knowledge in informatics engineering, Ishida-sensei encourage his students to get participate in NASA space apps challenge (hackathon) in Toyohashi, Japan. This is a yearly event which is held by NASA in many countries all over the world. In Japan, this event is held in several cities which are Toyohashi, Tokyo, Aizu, Kobe, Ube and Osaka. In Toyohashi, this event is held at trial village, a place near Toyohashi station (about 10 minutes-walk). Later, Indonesian student in Ishida’s lab are team up and register to the event with the name of Mantul Team. The event is held for two days from October 20th until October 21st 2018 (Saturday and Sunday). There are many participants which are coming from different places in Toyohashi or some cities near Toyohashi. All of them have many cool ideas and projects. Mantul Team itself is developing an image classifier system to recognize Mars image. In the future, this system can be implemented on a mars robot to explore mars planet and collect many data.

On the first day of hackathon, there is a presentation from Microsoft software engineer named Madoka Chiyoda a.k.a Chomado. She present Microsoft customvision.ai, a web-based tools for developing deep learning model for image processing and object detection.

Later after her presentation, she come to mantul team and ask about their project. Then they discuss about the detail of their project and she seems interested. They also talk about deep learning for computer vision since many students in Ishida’s lab have research about this field of study.

At the end of first day, all of participant present their project progress in front of all audiences. Oskar and Ilham have the opportunity to present their project and they get some advises to improve it.

On the second day of hackathon, the organizer said that there is a professor from Nagoya University which is coming to take a look. There is also a professor from Chubu University who has video calls with participant during the event, so that everyone can ask anything about the challenge. Then at the evening, everyone is preparing for the final presentation. Again, Oskar and Ilham get the opportunity to present the project. Since all of the audiences are Japanese people, Chomado-san help them in translating what they’re talking about into Japanese language. Then, many questions and discussion are popping up.

Finally, after the event is finished, Mantul Team receive some small gifts which are jackets and shirts, it’s so memorable. Finally, the event is officially closed with mini party for all participants. Later, a day after the event is finished, there are some news preach about NASA space apps challenge in Toyohashi.
